Job Shop

I set this one up as a tribute of sorts for all of my newspaper buddies. I started out as a photojournalist and from time to time I really miss it; with furlough days and layoffs it’s not a pretty industry to be working in right now though. These are also all of my grandmother’s newspapers (she’s the only person I know who continues to have them delivered to the door and still does the crosswords, everyday – you’ll see her handwriting folded over in the middle of the desk) and I used my grandfather’s Zippo and typewriter too, so I guess it’s a bit of a tribute to them as well.

The set up is cheap and simple really. I find half the battle in photography to be coming up with ideas not the technical side of things. The other half is being able to afford the ideas. This set cost me $14. Here’s how it all breaks down:

Chefs of Asheville NC

When I think of all the restaurants I’ve eaten at in Asheville it reminds of Johnny Cash’s song, “I’ve Been Everywhere”. I’ve eaten at (start singing here) The Admiral, Rezaz's, Early Girl Eatery, Cucina24, Zambra, Thirsty Monk, Jack of the Wood, Bouchon, Chai Pani, Rosetta’s Kitchen, Laughing Seed, even White Duck Taco Shop, I mean, I’ve had some nice meals in the AVL mountains.

Then I was called to shoot a series of chef portraits in Asheville and much to my surprise I was introduced to a whole new world of restaurants, I had never heard of. I realized during this assignment that I wasn’t the local, I thought I was.

Here are a few of my favorites:

Having an Assistant Helps

I’ll be the first to admit some time has passed since I last shot in the mindset of a travel photographer and when I did shoot for travel magazines around the country I certainly did not have an assistant with me.

I’ve shot the North Carolina Travel Guide, Asheville Visitors Guide and Images of Asheville at least three times each. But I haven’t been a staff photographer for the publishing company that produces those magazines in a long time. So when I got the call to shoot travel images for Asheville under my own name, the first thing that came to mind was what can I do now that I wasn’t able to do then? How can I create something different, more interesting, and more creative then the last images I produced for them?

Having an assistant helps.

More after the jump…

2011 Upstate Pride Parade w/ an iPhone

For the past three years I’ve shot the Upstate Pride Parade here in our little town. It’s pretty amazing to see 1500+ people marching through the streets of a small southern town in South Carolina singing and chanting for equal rights and the gay community.  There were a few protesters this year, maybe 15. Gay or not you simply can’t deny the positive energy moving around. Everyone is happy, proud and very colorful.

The march was at 11am this year.  It’s crazy hot here in...

The Mobile Market - Think Ice Cream Truck but with Fruits and Vegetables

When I worked at the Greenville News I became friends with one of the photojournalist. A guy named Ken Osburn who for decades made his living as a commercial photographer shooting automobiles in Detroit and Paris. I remember he would bring in theses sheets of 8x10 negatives (yup. 8 x 10 negatives) and start talking about how he made each one. I could listen to him talk for hours, mainly because I thought it was crazy what all he had to go through just to get one shot. One picture. You have to remember I was shooting digital for a newspaper at the time. Each assignment I went on was 50-100 images with captions. I could hardly fathom the idea of spending a week making one photo. Plus he walks with a 35mm Leica around his neck and shots just as much film as he does digital. That’s the kind of guy you

BTS w/ AVS

I shot the art for A Vacant Soul’s upcoming album back in February and I’m just now getting around to posting a short 55-second BTS video.  Nothing crazy just a little look into how the shoot went.

The music is “Destroy Something Beautiful”, the single off of their second album “We Are The Ones”. The title for the upcoming album is still being worked out but should hit iTunes and their merch site in September of this year.

A Case of the I Sucks

Lately I’ve had a bad case of the I sucks.  I don’t know if it’s because I’ve been looking at sites like 500 Photographers, spending too much time browsing Instagram or hanging out with some amazing shooters?

The year started out great and then I got caught up in the vicious cycle of comparing myself to other photographers. There must be a fine line between finding inspiration in the work of others and judging yourself against them.  Yet I can’t seem to find it. It’s either, I could have shot that, I wish I had shot that or why can’t I get shots like that? Never is it cool shot and move on. Why is that? Why can’t I just look and admire? Why do I have to compare myself?

I’m like a damn moth to a flame. I know I shouldn’t but I can’t resist. By the end of the day, I’ve looked, compared, think I suck again and can’t sleep until

More TEDxGreenville

I've had a few emails come in from people wanting to see the images I created during TEDxGreenville after my presentation. You can view all 125 of them on my FaceBook page. The idea was to have the audience help me create something interesting in the spirirt of TED. I had 5 dry-erase boards out so people were able to come up with their own message before stepping onto the backdrop. I shot during 3 one-hour breaks during the day. The real challenge was trying to

TEDxGreenville 2011

See video

Public speaking use to scare the hell out of me. Who am I kidding? It still scares the hell out of me but I'm starting to enjoy it more and more. Recently I had the honor of speaking at TEDxGreenville. The theme was, "Inspiring Our Future." I spoke about my struggles with
